In a strategic collaboration between Aksum University’s Community Service Directorate office and Aksum City and Central Zone Traffic Police offices, an intensive training on road and traffic safety principles was conducted for more than one hundred students and Teachers , aiming at mitigating road accidents and foster a culture of safety.
The inauguration of the training platform was presided over by the President of Aksum University, Professor Gebreyesus Birhane, who extended a formal welcome to the participants. In his opening address, Professor Gebreyesus articulated the primary objective of the initiative: to equip the academic community with the knowledge to assist the public and significantly reduce road-related damages. He emphatically stated that the ultimate goal of the training is to translate the acquired knowledge into tangible and practical action.
The training, entitled “Road and Traffic Safety Fundamentals and Principles,” was delivered by Commander Kinfé Gebrekidan and Inspector Aregawi Desta. The session engaged a total of 106 participants, comprising 101 students and 5 teachers selected from four different Schools in Axum Towm.
Echoing the President’s sentiments, Dr. Berhe Tafere, Director of the Community Service Directorate of AkU, charged the trainees with a critical responsibility. He underscored the imperative for them to disseminate the knowledge they acquired, acting as ambassadors for road safety to the wider student body and the broader community.
Further elaborating on the university’s commitment, Dr. Desta Gebretekle, Representative and Special adviser of the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, provided a strategic perspective. He clarified that such training programs are an integral part of the university’s annual agenda, designed specifically for accident prevention. “This training is particularly crucial for preventing traffic accidents during public holidays and in areas with high student concentration,” Dr. Desta asserted.
