On June 19, 2025, Aksum University and Eizana Mining Development officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration in sustainable mining development. The agreement outlines key areas of mutual support, including joint research, community service, the development of environmentally friendly mining technologies, and student internship and externship programs.
The MoU comes at a time when the gold mining sector is undergoing significant transformation, particularly due to increasing global scrutiny regarding the use of hazardous chemicals such as mercury and cyanide. Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to advancing alternative, greener technologies in mineral exploration and processing.
The agreement was signed by Professor Gebreyesus Birhane, President of Aksum University, and Mr. Tesfatsion, General Manager of Eizana Mining Development. Both leaders emphasized the mutual benefits of the partnership, noting its potential to support institutional growth and contribute to the socio-economic development of surrounding communities.
Dr. Dawit Mamo, Head of Aksum University’s Shire Campus, delivered remarks highlighting the strategic goals of the partnership—to bridge academic expertise with industry practice, while promoting innovation, environmental responsibility, and regional development.
To ensure effective implementation of the MoU, Mr. Bereket Gebreslassie, Dean of the Faculty of Mines at Aksum University, and Mr. Guesh from Eizana Mining Development were officially appointed to lead coordination and follow-up activities.
This partnership marks a forward-looking step toward responsible mining practices, experiential learning opportunities for students, and impactful research that addresses both local needs and global sustainability priorities.
