AKSUM, TIGRAY, (Ethiopia) — The Aksum University Legal Aid Center, in collaboration with the Tigray Environmental and Sustainable Development Organization (TESDO), recently convened a vital public discussion workshop focused on “Emerging Crimes in War-Affected Tigray: Emphasis on Environmental Crimes and Sustainability.” This workshop represents a core component of the ongoing project, “Revitalizing Post-Conflict Criminal Justice in Tigray: Strengthening Legal Aid and Promoting Restorative Justice.” The initiative is prominently funded by the European Union through a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) program, with significant co-funding and institutional support from Aksum University’s Community Service Directorate. The event featured a distinguished assembly of Aksum University’s top leadership, including the President, H.E. Prof. Gebreyesus Brhane; the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, H.E. Dr. Mekonen Aregai; and the Vice President for Academic Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mulugeta Berihu. The dialogue was further enriched by the presence of college deans, academic scholars, religious and community leaders, and representatives from various justice institutions, government offices, and civil society organizations. During the sessions, participants highlighted the grave environmental toll of the Tigray War, noting that the destruction of government institutions and the collapse of regulatory control have led to unprecedented levels of deforestation and land degradation. There was a unanimous emphasis on the urgent need for coordinated, sustained engagement to address these challenges and mitigate the accelerating effects of climate change in the region. The workshop concluded with a call to integrate environmental protection into the broader revitalization of the criminal justice system, ensuring that sustainability remains a pillar of Tigray’s post-conflict recovery.

የአክሱም ዩኒቨርሲቲ የነፃ የሕግ ድጋፍ ማዕከል በትግራይ አካባቢ ጥበቃና ዘላቂ ልማት ድርጅት (TESDO) ጋር በመተባበር “በጦርነት በተጎዳችው ትግራይ ውስጥ እየታዩ ያሉ ወንጀሎች፡ ትኩረት በአካባቢያዊ ወንጀሎች እና ዘላቂነት ላይ” በሚል መሪ ቃል በቅርቡ ወሳኝ የሕዝባዊ ውይይት አውደ ጥናት አካሂዷል።

ይህ አውደ ጥናት “ከግጭት በኋላ በትግራይ የወንጀል ፍትህን ማነቃቃት፡ የሕግ ድጋፍን ማጠናከር እና የሁኔታ መመለሻ (Restorative) ፍትህን ማሳደግ” የተሰኘውና በመከናወን ላይ ያለ ፕሮጀክት ዋና አካል ነው። ይህ ተነሳሽነት በዋናነት በአውሮፓ ህብረት የገንዘብ ድጋፍ የተደረገለትና በተባበሩት መንግስታት የዕፅ እና ወንጀል መከላከል ጽሕፈት ቤት (UNODC) ፕሮግራም አማካኝነት የሚተገበር ሲሆን፤ ከአክሱም ዩኒቨርሲቲ የማህበረሰብ አገልግሎት ዳይሬክቶሬትም ከፍተኛ የጋራ የገንዘብ ድጋፍና ተቋማዊ እገዛ ተደርጎለታል።

በዝግጅቱ ላይ የዩኒቨርሲቲው ከፍተኛ አመራሮች የተገኙ ሲሆን፣ እነርሱም፦

በተጨማሪም የኮሌጅ ዲኖች፣ ምሁራን፣ የሃይማኖትና የማህበረሰብ መሪዎች እንዲሁም የፍትህ ተቋማት፣ የመንግስት መስሪያ ቤቶች እና የሲቪክ ማህበራት ተወካዮች በመገኘት ውይይቱን አበልጽገውታል።

በውይይቱ ወቅት ተሳታፊዎች የትግራይ ጦርነት በአካባቢ ላይ ያደረሰውን ከፍተኛ ጉዳት አጽንኦት ሰጥተው አንስተዋል። የመንግስት ተቋማት መውደም እና የቁጥጥር ስርአቱ መፈራረስ ታይቶ የማይታወቅ የደን መጨፍጨፍ እና የመሬት መራቆት እንዲከሰት ማድረጉን ጠቁመዋል። እነዚህን ተግዳሮቶች ለመፍታት እና በክልሉ እየተፋጠነ የመጣውን የአየር ንብረት ለውጥ ተፅእኖ ለመቀነስ የተቀናጀና ቀጣይነት ያለው ተሳትፎ እንደሚያስፈልግ በሙሉ ድምፅ ተገልጿል።

አውደ ጥናቱ የተጠናቀቀው የአካባቢ ጥበቃ ጉዳይን ሰፊ በሆነው የወንጀል ፍትህ ስርአት ማነቃቂያ ስራ ውስጥ በማካተት፣ ዘላቂነት በትግራይ ከግጭት በኋላ የማገገም ሂደት ውስጥ እንደ ዋና ምሰሶ እንዲቀጥል ጥሪ በማቅረብ ነው።
