First and foremost, we would like to welcome those who are interested to visit Aksum University website to know when and how the university was established and operated and also to know the current status of the university. Aksum University, which is one of the second generation universities in Ethiopia, was established in the historical and ancient Aksum town in 2007 but was inaugurated officially later in 2011 under the Council of Ministers Regulations no 225/2011Council of Ministers Regulations.
It is located in the Northern part of Ethiopia, Tigray regional state, at a distance of 1035 km from the capital city, Addis Ababa. In its existence, the university has continued its work with the given mandates: teaching and learning, research and community services. The university started its normal operation with five faculties and ten offices. At the beginning, Aksum University started the teaching and learning process with an enrolment capacity of 735 undergraduate students. The university planned to the new phase of transformation of the faculties into six colleges having 50 departments and 19 support directorate offices. Currently, the university has a president and three vice Presidents with four campuses plus one research and demonstration center. The previous structure was reorganized into six colleges and two institutes.
The existing academic colleges and institutes are: College of Business and Economics, College of Natural and Computational Science, College of Social Sciences and Languages, College of Health Science, College of Agriculture, College of Education and Behavioral Science, Aksum Institute of Technology which is comprised of six faculties, and Institute of Archaeology and Tourism. Under these divisions, the university offers a total of 106 programs (71 undergraduate and 35 post graduate programs) with a total of 12658 students under the regular program and 9548 students under continuing education program. This resulted in a total of current student enrollment capacity of 22,206.
During its inauguration, Aksum University had a total of 60 academic and more than 150 supportive staff. Currently; however, with a leap frog a total of 1683 academic staff (1096 on duty and 587 on study leave), 2188 administrative staff (1802 support staff and 386 health professionals) and 148 technical assistant (117 on duty and 31 on study leave) are working at Aksum University. In addition, about 22 expatriates are employed in our university.
Aksum University is categorized as Applied Science University by the FDRE Ministry of Education. The university is designed and rearranged itself to undertake the applied Science Strategies, objectives and activities including provision of material as well as manpower inputs through fostering of awareness creation trainings. Hence, currently the University is undertaking the mission of Applied Science University as per its category.
